Artist Statement

I am always amazed at the courage and stamina it took to construct this highway before the Japanese could start invading. The old timers have told me about driving into sleepy little Dawson Creek only to find it inundated with U.S. troops.
I have tried to emphasize the immensity and brutality of the wilderness that had to be overcome…and quickly. Dutch Harbour had already been bombed and the Japanese troops were already on U.S. soil at Attu in the Aleutian islands…so the threat to North American security was immense at that period.
