Open Sky

Held annually, Open Sky provides an opportunity for regional artists to exhibit their work throughout the region. Award-winning works of art are chosen by the jurors and include

  • Distinguished Representational Award,
  • Distinguished Conceptual Award,
  • Distinguished Three-Dimension Award,
  • Distinguished Photography Award,
  • 9 Chosen Awards,
  • Honorable Mentions, and
  • Toni Onley Artists’ Project Scholarship (sponsored by Island Mountain Arts).

With the sponsorship of the BC Arts Council, Peace River Regional District, Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, Ovintiv, Island Mountain Arts, and volunteers provided by the local arts councils, Open Sky sees growth in the number and quality of the art being exhibited every year.

  • All mediums, sizes, and forms of work will be accepted.
  • Open to all artists residing in the Peace River Regional District and/or the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality.
  • All artists who submit to Open Sky must stay at arm’s length of the jurors.
  • Only original artwork is eligible. No copies from magazines, mechanical reproductions, kits, or commercial molds.
  • Works previously entered in the Open Sky Exhibition (formerly Regional Juried Art Exhibit) are ineligible.
  • Work must have been completed after January 2022.
  • Work submitted must be ready to install. All two-dimensional works need to be installation-ready (either framed or mounted) with a hanging mechanism, and all three-dimensional works must come with supports (if required).
  • Limit of FOUR entries per artist.
  • Entry fees are $10 per entry OR $25 (or pay what you can) annual membership fee with no submission fees

Criteria/Requirements

  • Open to youth ages 10-17 in Peace River Regional District  or the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality.
  • All mediums and forms of work will be accepted. All work must be ready to hang. Wire hangers are preferred.
  • Only original artwork is eligible. No copies from magazines, mechanical reproductions, kits or commercial molds.
  • Limit of FOUR entries per artist.
  • The entry fee is $10 per submission and work will not be juried.
  • Works difficult to move or install due to size, weight or fragility should not be entered.

The Open Sky Artist in Residence program supports any visual artist residing in the Peace River Regional District or the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality.

 

The successful applicant will gain experience installing and curating an exhibition and will be provided with studio space within the Open Sky Exhibition, held at the Tamarack Hall in the Chetwynd Rec Centre in Chetwynd, BC. The Artist in Residence is a representative of Arts North East (Peace Liard Regional Arts Council) and is responsible for welcoming visitors and monitoring the security of the exhibition.

What do I need to submit artwork to Open Sky 2023?

1. Entry Fee

A non-refundable entry fee of $10 (per piece)

OR

$25 / year (or pay what you can) Arts North East (Peace Liard Regional Arts Council) Membership

MEMBERHIP BENEFITS
● One vote at regular meetings and the AGM
● Members who are residents of the Peace River Regional District (PRRD) and/or the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM) are eligible to participate in Arts North East programs, including Open Sky Exhibition, Open Sky Artist in Residence, Artist in Residence, Peace Prose, and Ekphrastic Writing, with no submission fees
● Non-residents of the PRRD and NRRM are eligible for membership but may not participate in the Open Sky Exhibition, Open Sky Artist in Residence, Artist in Residence, Peace Prose, or Ekphrastic Writing
● Early bird registration and discounted tickets to Arts North East events
● Eligible to be included in the Permanent Collection
● Eligible to create a profile in the Arts North East Directory
● Ability to post in Pollination Station
● Ability to post in Regional Calendar
● Access to monthly newsletter

2. Digital Images for Adjudication and Online Exhibition

Artists must submit 1 to 3 images.  Images should include depictions of the entire piece as well as details of the work.

Artists can submit up to three images of each artwork.
