Artist Statement

This piece was inspired by the work I do reviving Culture. If not for the ancestors who fought to stay alive and fought for our rights we would not be were we are today. They literally carried us on their backs when we were babies, and kept the language and culture alive by passing those teaching onto the next generation. The ancestors are the ones carrying the canoes, the killer whale with two salmon and baby seal inside it stomach, the 2 wolves on the tail of the killer whale. and on the left is a women surfing sandwiches between the dorsal fin and the grizzly bear, on the nose of the whale rides a Turtle with a eagle on it’s back. These animals are all supporting the canoes, the canoe in front is holding a Thunderbird dancer looking ahead in the front, a Grizzly Bear dancer in the middle, and a women wearing a blanket and cedar bark hat, the women thoughts are visible and the only color on the entire panel, she’s thinking of fish for the winter, red salmon then right of that is a cabin, her home, right of the cabin is a man with a baby on this back, and they are near a fire that is to the right of the two. The canoe on the right side has a hunter with a bull Elk in the canoe, he signs a song happily as the sun beams upon his back. Then on top of the Dorsal fin is a large Thunderbird nosing the canoe in front along.
